Torturer-In-Chief gets Nobel Peace Prize

Little Known Military Thug Squad Still Brutalizing Prisoners at Gitmo Under Obama

As the Obama administration continues to fight the release of some 2,000 photos that graphically document U.S. military abuse of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan, an ongoing Spanish investigation is adding harrowing details to the ever-emerging portrait of the torture inside and outside Guantánamo. Among them: "blows to [the] testicles;" "detention underground in total darkness for three weeks with deprivation of food and sleep;" being "inoculated … through injection with 'a disease for dog cysts;'" the smearing of feces on prisoners; and waterboarding. The torture, according to the Spanish investigation, all occurred "under the authority of American military personnel" and was sometimes conducted in the presence of medical professionals.

More significantly, however, the investigation could for the first time place an intense focus on a notorious, but seldom discussed, thug squad deployed by the U.S. military to retaliate with excessive violence to the slightest resistance by prisoners at Guantánamo.

The force is officially known as the the Immediate Reaction Force or Emergency Reaction Force, but inside the walls of Guantánamo, it is known to the prisoners as the Extreme Repression Force. Despite President Barack Obama's publicized pledge to close the prison camp and end torture -- and analysis from human rights lawyers who call these forces' actions illegal -- IRFs remain very much active at Guantánamo.

IRF: An Extrajudicial Terror Squad

The existence of these forces has been documented since the early days of Guantánamo, but it has rarely been mentioned in the U.S. media or in congressional inquiries into torture. On paper, IRF teams are made up of five military police officers who are on constant stand-by to respond to emergencies. "The IRF team is intended to be used primarily as a forced-extraction team, specializing in the extraction of a detainee who is combative, resistive, or if the possibility of a weapon is in the cell at the time of the extraction," according to a declassified copy of the Standard Operating Procedures for Camp Delta at Guantánamo. The document was signed on March 27, 2003, by Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the man credited with eventually "Gitmoizing" Abu Ghraib and other U.S.-run prisons and who reportedly ordered subordinates to treat prisoners "like dogs." Gen. Miller ran Guantánamo from November 2002 until August 2003 before moving to Iraq in 2004.

Warmonger Wins Peace Prize

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

It took 25 years longer than George Orwell thought for the slogans of 1984 to become reality.

“War is Peace,” “Freedom is Slavery,” “Ignorance is Strength.”

I would add, “Lie is Truth.”

The Nobel Committee has awarded the 2009 Peace Prize to President Obama, the person who started a new war in Pakistan, upped the war in Afghanistan, and continues to threaten Iran with attack unless Iran does what the US government demands and relinquishes its rights as a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty.

Barack Obama, Murderer and War Criminal-in-Chief

I will be blunt, for certain conclusions are now inescapable, even this early in the miraculous, transcendent Age of Obama. Insofar as those who regularly follow political matters are concerned, and especially with regard to those people who write about politics and foreign policy -- which is to say, insofar as commentators and reporters in the mainstream media and on blogs are concerned -- to continue to believe that Barack Obama represents any kind of "improvement" over the abomination of George W. Bush is not an innocent error. To persist in delusions of this kind requires that one intentionally and deliberately blind oneself to evidence that assaults us every day.  full post here

Don't let the door hit you on the way out

"Former" President Bush - I like the sound of that. It's not as good as "Inmate" Bush, but it's a start.

The Rebooting of America, 2008

"Today, the mean-spirited Christian Taliban who hijacked the Republican Party woke up and found out that their nightmare came true and That One – the secret Arab, Muslim, Terrorist Redistributionist – was elected by folks who just couldn’t stands it no more. They also found out that their belief that “pro-American parts of the country” would be the key to advancing their theocratic notions was, to quote Bill Clinton, “a fairy tale” – a vicious, racist, soundly rejected one at that."  full article here

'The United States Has Essentially a One-Party System'

The linguist and public intellectual Noam Chomsky has long been a critic of American consumerism and imperialism. SPIEGEL spoke to him about the current crisis of capitalism, Barack Obama's rhetoric and the compliance of the intellectual class.

Name That Candidate

Which Candidate Supports Petraeus, the Bailout, the Death Penalty, Nuclear Power, the Occupation, the Cuban Embargo ...

from Counterpunch

And while we're at it, let's catalog of few of Barack Obama's progressive qualifications to be next President of the United States of Imperialism. Well first, there's his adamant condemnation of the war in Iraq. Why, he was against it from the very start. Of course, that hasn't prevented him from voting continually to fund the Occupation. But hey, he has to get elected before he can implement all his wonderful changey policies, right? You know, like maintaining a presence of 50,000 to 80,000 troops in Iraq, along with a dozen or so permanent military bases and the world's largest foreign embassy. Then there is his pledge to escalate the "good war" in Afghanistan. We've only killed about 10,000 or so innocent civilians there in the last few years. I won't feel safe until we can push those numbers much higher. And Pakistan? Sending robot drones out to drop bombs on people is my kind of progressive war. Obama has assured us he'll continue that policy and actually increase the number of illegal violations of that country's sovereignty. Right on.

But let's not stop there. The list of Obama's support for progressive issues is a long one. For instance, he endorsed immunity for the Telecoms. It's a good thing, too. We can't have corporations facing legal action or law suits for spying on us. After all, they are only trying to protect us from terrorists. And Barack is a true friend to the Zionist regime in Israel. He'll do everything in his power to prevent those nasty Iranians from destroying Israel and driving them into the sea. Israel's apartheid colonization of the West Bank, in direct violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions is inconvenient for the Palestinians. But what the heck. They don't have much of a Lobby in Washington. And you hardly ever have to read about their suffering, not even in the so-called Progressive media. Why, I don't think I've ever heard anything at all about the suffering of the Palestinian people on Air America. So who needs to worry about them? We can still hear and read non-stop Obamadulation, no matter how bad things may be in Gaza. What's wrong with that?

They're really desparate now: McCain volunteer fakes attack, blames black Obama supporter

Scene from Birth of A Nation

Over the past couple of weeks, McCain-Palin campaign events have increasingly resembled Klan rallies, with supporters calling for the murder of Obama and using the N-word to insult black reporters in attendance.

Now, a campaign volunteer has tried to play the White Woman Attacked by Black Man card -

Ashley Todd claimed that she had been attacked by a black man who was outraged after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.  Allegedly, the attacker not only beat her, he sexually assaulted her and carved a "B" on her face.

The inbred right-wing
blogosphere jumped all over the story, visions of "Birth of a Nation" dancing in their heads - unfortunately for them, the whole thing was a hoax, and cops are charging the McCain volunteer, Ashley Todd, with making a false report to police.

Only 11 days left - let's see what other desperate stunts the McCain-Palin freak show comes up with.

How The Liberal Left Helps Capitalism

from NYC Indymedia:

"Of course, in each succeeding election, it keep’s getting harder to tell exactly which candidate is the “lesser,” as opposed to the “greater,” evil or who is the “progressive” and who is the “reactionary” candidate. And this year’s contest is no exception no matter how many meaningless banalities and platitudes Barack Obama throws out about “change.” Surrounded by Carter and Clinton era cold warriors and counter-revolutionaries and Goldman-Sachs “Chicago Boys” de-regulators, and endorsed by Bush gang war criminals like Colin Powell, Obama is even less likely to deliver any change than a meal from MacDonalds used to claim to do.

Both McCain and Obama supported giving the crooks on Wall Street $700 billion of the workers money and dictatorial powers over it to Henry Paulson. Only Obama and the Democrats were even more gung-ho to do so, with no strings attached, than were the Republicans. Both of them also supported giving the rest of the government dictatorial powers over the American people since they both voted to renew the police state “PATRIOT” Act and the revised “FISA” Act. And both support the death penalty. While you wouldn’t expect to hear John McCain speaking up for the likes of Troy Anthony Davis, let alone Mumia Abu Jamal, you won’t hear a word from Obama about their cases either. Indeed when the cops who murdered Shawn Bell got off scott-free, Obama admonished his supporters in the Black community not to resort to violence!

Both McCain and Obama support George Bush’s “war on terror,” want to increase spending on the war machine and the size of the military to fight it, maintain the occupation of Iraq and intensify the war in Afghanistan. Both agree with George Bush that the “surge” was such a smashing success that such a shift in focus is now, not only possible, but desirable. Only Obama and the Democrats, who have been beating the drums for a bigger and better war in Afghanistan long before McCain jumped on board the band-wagon, sugar-coat it by calling it “withdrawal.” And let’s not forget their shared enthusiasm for rocket-rattling against Iran and Russia."

Chomsky, Zinn, and Obama

Elections & Voting
Chomsky, Zinn, and Obama

By Mickey Z.

Online Journal Contributing Writer

Oct 24, 2008, 00:20

“You don’t stick a knife in a man’s back nine inches, and then pull it out six inches, and say you’re making progress.” --Malcolm X

Another Election Day approaches and I’m reminded of something the late Pakistani dissident, Eqbal Ahmad said about Noam Chomsky in the book, Confronting Empire (2000): “He (Chomsky) has never wavered. He has never fallen into the trap of saying, ‘Clinton will do better.’ Or ‘Nixon was bad but Carter at least had a human rights presidency.’ There is a consistency of substance, of posture, of outlook in his work.”

But along came 2004 . . . when Chomsky said stuff like this: “Anyone who says ‘I don’t care if Bush gets elected’ is basically telling poor and working people in the country, ‘I don’t care if your lives are destroyed.’” And like this: “Despite the limited differences [between Bush and Kerry] both domestically and internationally, there are differences. In a system of immense power, small differences can translate into large outcomes.”

Standing alongside Chomsky was Howard Zinn, saying stuff like this: “Kerry, if he will stop being cautious, can create an excitement that will carry him into the White House and, more important, change the course of the nation.”

Fast forward to 2008 and Chomsky sez: “I would suggest voting against McCain, which means voting for Obama without illusions.” And once again, Howard Zinn is in agreement: “Even though Obama does not represent any fundamental change, he creates an opening for a possibility of change.” (Two word rejoinder: Bill Clinton)

This strategy of choosing an alleged “lesser evil” because he/she might be influenced by some mythical “popular movement” would be naïve if put forth by a high school student. Professors Chomsky and Zinn know better. If it’s incremental change they want, why not encourage their many readers to vote for Ralph Nader or Cynthia McKinney? The classic (read: absurd) reply to that question is: “Because Nader or McKinney can’t win.”  read more
